In order to help people provide initial support for someone with a mental health problem, the Centre for Mental Health Research at the Australian National University has developed a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training course. The MHFA course is a 12-hour course developed in 2000 by Betty Kitchener and Professor Tony Jorm with the aim of improving the mental health literacy of members of the Australian community. Suicide Helpline Call Back Service (SHL CBS)

This line is staffed by qualified, professional counsellors. The SHL CBS operates seven days per week between 10:00 am and 8:30 pm. The service offers its clients up to six 45 minute telephone counselling sessions over the course of up to six weeks. SHL CBS counsellors provide professional support to:
- people at risk of suicide
- people bereaved by suicide
- people caring or concerned for someone at risk of suicide
